What’s Going on at
Van Buren Public Schools?
Are schools closing?
Beginning with the 2012-13 school year, we are closing Elwell and Haggerty Elementary Schools.
Our students will attend one of the four remaining elementary schools:
- Edgemont Elementary
- Rawsonville Elementary
- Savage Elementary
- Tyler Elementary
Why are schools closing?
There are many positive reasons for this change. Students will attend schools closest to their homes, school start times will be streamlined, band and athletics will be reconfigured, among many positive changes.
Most importantly, this will enable us to redirect funds to where they are most needed – student learning.

What other changes are being made?
The gifted and talented program will be relocating to Savage Elementary School. South Middle School will be the 5th and 6th grade building. North Middle School will be the 7th and 8th grade building. Belleville High School will remain the 9th – 12th grade building.
How do I know where my student will go next year?
We have redrawn attendance boundary lines on this map.
Can’t quite figure out what elementary school your student will attend? Call the Superintendent’s office at 734-697-9123 or email email@example.com.
Will my student be on the bus for a long period of time?
Actually, students will most likely spend less time on the bus, as many will be attending a school closer to their homes.
Will the redistricting and closure plan force class sizes to become larger next year?
Class sizes will not increase because of this plan. In fact, by evenly distributing the students, class sizes should become more balanced and elementary splits should decrease.
I want my student to attend another school in the district. Is this possible?
With the district reconfiguring, the transfer request policy has been altered. Because of classroom size and student numbers, transfer requests will be fewer and on a case-by-case basis.
